Tectonic earthquakes jolt Ilocos provinces

VIGAN CITY, Feb. 18, 2011, (PIA) - A tectonic quake with magnitude 5.0 jolted some areas in Northern Luzon today (Friday), according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PhiVolcs) satellite based in Sinait, Ilocos Sur.


Three mild quakes were also recorded by PhiVolcs in Benguet province last Thursday; however, no damage to properties reported after these quakes as of presstime.


Local Phivolcs Researcher Porferio De Peralta said that the magnitude 5.0 quake happened at about 6:20AM Friday with its epicenter located at 9 kilometres northwest of La Trinidad, Benguet with a shallow depth of 14 kilometres. Intensity 4 was felt in Baguio City; intensity 3 in San Fernando City, La Union and intensity 2 in Burgos, Ilocos Sur. It also reported that aftershock will be expected to occur after the quake.


Meanwhile, De Peralta reported that the first earthquake in Benguet province last Thursday occured at about 11:54AM with magnitude 3.3 and its epicenter located at 8 kilometres northwest of La Trinidad, Benguet with a depth of 9 kilometres. Intensity 2 was felt in Baguio City.


The second quake last Thursday was occurred at about 2:25PM with magnitude 3.1. The epicenter was at 7 kilometers southeast of Baguio City with a depth of 8 kilometers and intensity 2 was again felt in the said place.


The last quake in Baguio City had a magnitude 3.0 occurring at about 2:25 PM Thursday with its epicenter located at 13 kilometres northeast of the city with a depth of 26 kilometres. Intensity 2 was felt in the area.


De Peralta advised local residents in the affected area to take extra vigilance to anticipate any damage or harm during and after the quake. (PIA/Ilocos Sur)
