Een waardeloos geworden Russische telecomsatelliet keert eerstdaags naar de Aarde terug. Dat meldt een woordvoerder van het Russische ruimtevaartbureau Roscosmos.

Op 18 augustus werd de meer dan vijf ton wegende Express-AM4 verkeerd gelanceerd. De oorzaak lag bij een programmeerfout in de baaninjector. Het tuig was niet meer te redden en draaide nutteloze banen om de Aarde.

De kunstmaan -de zwaarste ooit die in Europa gebouwd werd- zal nu op 25 of 26 maart tussen Japan en de VS in de Stille Oceaan ploffen. Gevaar is er niet mee gemoeid, al komt er wel een lokaal verbod voor scheepvaart- en luchtvaartverkeer.

De satelliet kostte zowat 300 miljoen dollar en moest instaan voor een waaier van telecomdiensten. Het hele territorium van de vroegere Sovjetunie en Centraal-Europa had er normaal gezien van kunnen profiteren. Het tuig was voor ongeveer 194 miljoen euro verzekerd.

Een tropische storm heeft in het noorden van Australië lelijk huisgehouden in het stadje Townsville. De mini-wervelstorm, die snelheden haalde van meer dan 110 km/u, vernielde in de vroege ochtend een zestigtal gebouwen. Dertien mensen raakten gewond. De storm rukte tientallen daken van de huizen, knapte stroomleidingen en blies auto's en bomen omver. De stad aan de oostkust van het continent werd tot rampgebied uitgeroepen.

Anna Bligh kwam als premier van de deelstaat Queensland al een kijkje nemen. "Ik ben gechoqueerd door de omvang van de schade. Enkele slachtoffers zullen gedurende maanden niet meer kunnen terugkeren naar hun huis."

"Het hele huis daverde op zijn grondvesten, vooral de bovenste verdieping. Het lawaai was oorverdovend", aldus bewoonster Erin Matinca op televisiezender ABC. Ze werd wakker toen de wind de meubelen in het huis had omvergeworpen. "We moesten in de gang blijven, dat was de enige plaats die veilig was voor rondvliegend vensterglas."

Aanhangwagen paar huizen verder

De ware omvang van de vernieling was pas bij dageraad zichtbaar, vertelde Tony Ebon. De storm had zijn twee ton zware aanhangwagen een paar huizen verder geblazen. Shane Fayers en zijn gezin vluchtten in het toilet van hun woning toen de storm hun huis vernielde. Dak en muren werden weggerukt.

"Het duurde slechts een tiental minuten. Ik kon voelen hoe het huis werd uiteengereten. Dat was redelijk wild", zei Fayers. Soldaten van een nabijgelegen kazerne zijn opgeroepen om mee de schade te helpen opruimen.

Severe storms and flash flooding will crawl eastward tonight, threatening communities from Louisiana to Missouri and eastern Kansas.

**Latest Storm Highlights: There have been incidents of flooded homes and roadways from eastern Texas to eastern Kansas and Louisiana. A tornado may have touched down near Zwolle, La., during the midday. Another possible tornado downed trees and caused power outages in Goldonna, La., early in the afternoon. One person was injured as a tree crashed down onto a home in Morrilton, Ark.**

Cities in the path of potentially damaging storms include Lake Charles and Baton Rouge, La. and Little Rock, Ark.

Torrential downpours unleashing 1-3 inches of rain, and locally more over the course of a few hours will threaten flash flooding, by far the biggest severe weather concern tonight.

Heavy rain from slow-moving thunderstorms led to numerous road closures and high water rescues all across central Texas on Monday night, including in San Antonio, Austin, Waco and Dallas. Flooding also occurred in eastern Oklahoma.

As strong winds in the upper atmosphere interact with the warm, moist air streaming north, some thunderstorms capable of producing a brief tornado will continue to be possible in central and eastern Louisiana, central and northeastern Louisiana and part of western Mississippi this evening.

Although the set up is not ideal for an outbreak of twisters, it takes just one tornado moving over a populated area to cause destruction.

Wind gusts in excess of 50 mph, large hail and frequent lightning strikes will also be a hallmark of the strongest thunderstorms.


While damaging thunderstorms are most likely from the upper Texas coast and western Louisiana to central Arkansas, the threat for heavy rain and a few isolated strong storms will extend farther north.

Portions of western Missouri, are expected to have at least a couple inches of rain this afternoon and evening from thunderstorms, in addition to what fell late on Monday.

Here too, heavy rain will turn gently flowing creeks and streams into torrents of rushing water, while also flooding low-lying, poor-drainage and urbanized areas.

Early, rapid thaw of winter ice on a northern Ontario lake has been called an "emergency situation," as workers race against time to bring in ice-fishing shacks.

Ice covering Mille Lacs Lake has been thawing quickly amid soaring temperatures, forcing volunteer workers to bring in the shacks before the ice becomes totally unsafe, a story on the CBC News website said on Monday.

Since last Thursday, workers having been using trucks with tracks to pull in the shacks, sometimes putting in 20-hour days.

A spokesman involved in the work said that up to half a meter (nearly 20 inches) of water was ponded on the ice in places. "The ice is really porous and it's not safe for anything," the man was quoted as saying.

Popular with ice fishermen, the northwest Ontario lake has been caught up in the same freak summerlike warmth that has smashed temperature records on both sides of the Canada/U.S. border.

At nearby Upsala, Ontario, three straight days, Saturday through Monday, had high temperatures of 23 to 24 degrees C (73 to 75 degrees F), meteorological data accessed by AccuWeather.com showed.

The normal July high temperature in Upsala is about 23 degrees C, whereas that of the latest winter is about freezing.

Zware aardbeving in Mexico

Acapulco - Het zuiden van Mexico is dinsdag getroffen door een zware aardbeving. Die had een kracht van 7,6. Aanvankelijk was sprake van een kracht van 7,9. Het epicentrum lag zo'n 200 kilometer ten oosten van de stad Acapulco, op een diepte van ongeveer 18 kilometer. Dat heeft de Amerikaanse geologische dienst USGS laten weten.

De grond begon rond het middaguur (lokale tijd) te trillen. Voor zover bekend zijn er geen doden gevallen. De Mexicaanse president Felipe Calderon zei via zijn Twitteraccount dat er nog geen ernstige schade is gemeld. Er zijn alleen wat „gebroken ruiten en andere kleine beschadigingen”, zei Calderón. Alle elektriciteitscentrales draaien normaal. De stroomvoorziening is op sommige plekken onderbroken, maar daar wordt aan gewerkt, aldus Calderón.

Het epicentrum lag in de zuidelijke staat Guerrero. Daar zijn ongeveer 500 huizen beschadigd. „Godzijdank is niemand om het leven gekomen”, zei gouverneur Angel Aguirre. In de aangrenzende staat Oaxaca zijn scheuren ontstaan in schoolgebouwen en zijn ruiten gebarsten.

Een Nederlandse getuige liet aan het ANP weten dat elektriciteitskabels zijn geknapt. De aardbeving was ook te voelen in hoofdstad Mexico Stad, waar gebouwen heen en weer schudden. Mensen renden in paniek de straat op.

Korte tijd na de beving volgden zeker drie naschokken. De trillingen waren tot in het Midden-Amerikaanse Guatemala te voelen.

Er is geen gevaar voor een grote tsunami. Het epicentrum lag in de binnenlanden van Mexico. Wel kunnen er mogelijk plaatselijk vloedgolven komen, meldt het Tsunamiwaarschuwingscentrum.

Mexico ligt aan de Ring van Vuur, een gebied rond de Grote Oceaan waar veel aardbevingen en vulkaanuitbarstingen voorkomen.

Aarde beeft ook in Indonesië JAKARTA - Vrijwel gelijktijdig met de zware aardbeving in Mexico trilde de grond ook in het verre oosten van Indonesië. De beving had een kracht van 6,2. Dat meldde de Amerikaanse geologische dienst USGS.

De Golfregio wordt sinds zaterdag geteisterd door een zandstorm. In Saoedi-Arabië blijven scholen gesloten en hadden mensen verzorging nodig in het ziekenhuis. In Jemen is het luchtverkeer verstoord.


Het Saoedische ministerie van Onderwijs kondigde de sluiting aan van scholen in het noorden, oosten en zuidwesten van het grote koninkrijk.


In de hoofdstad Riyad werden honderden mensen, vooral kinderen, in het ziekenhuis opgenomen. Zij hadden ademhalingsproblemen door astma of allergieën. Ook de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten en Koeweit delen in de klappen.

OUDTSHOORN NEWS - Contrary to reports, Meiringspoort was not closed to traffic on Thursday during a 'flash flood'.

However, traffic was indeed brought to a halt for 20 minutes after the Groot Rivier flooded and submerged a low water bridge on the Klaarstroom (northern) side at 16:00 after a cloudburst.

Morne Thysse, who was there to photograph the incident, said the waterlevel was 30cm above the bridge

An intense dust storm spanned hundreds of kilometers over Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan on March 19, 2012. The dust spread southward over the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, and swept northeastward along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this natural-color image on March 19. Some source points for the storm could be seen in southern Afghanistan, and dust blew from these points in southeast-northeast arcs. Most of the dust plumes in this storm were thick enough to completely hide the land and water surfaces below.

A combination of sand seas and impermanent lakes occur along the borders between Iran, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, and the fine sediments from these features often provide material for dust storms. Winds provide the other necessary ingredient, and hot temperatures can increase the likelihood of dust storms by making air near the ground unstable. On March 19, 2012, Pakistan’s Meteorological Department called for dry, windy weather over northern Balochistan Province over the next 24 hours.

An equinox occurs twice a year, when the tilt of the Earth's axis is inclined neither away from nor towards the Sun, the center of the Sun being in the same plane as the Earth's equator. The term equinox can also be used in a broader sense, meaning the date when such a passage happens. The name "equinox" is derived from the Latin aequus (equal) and nox (night), because around the equinox, the night and day have approximately equal length.

At an equinox, the Sun is at one of two opposite points on the celestial sphere where the celestial equator (i.e. declination 0) and ecliptic intersect. These points of intersection are called equinoctial points: classically, the vernal point and the autumnal point. By extension, the term equinox may denote an equinoctial point.

An equinox happens each year at two specific moments in time (rather than two whole days), when there is a location (the subsolar point) on the Earth's equator, where the center of the Sun can be observed to be vertically overhead, occurring around March 20 and September 22 each year.

Although the word equinox is often understood to mean "equal [day and] night", this is not strictly true. For most locations on earth, there are two distinct identifiable days per year when the length of day and night are closest to being equal; those days are referred to as the "equiluxes" to distinguish them from the equinoxes. Equinoxes are points in time, but equiluxes are days. By convention, equiluxes are the days where sunrise and sunset are closest to being exactly 12 hours apart.

On a day of the equinox, the center of the Sun spends a roughly equal amount of time above and below the horizon at every location on the Earth, night and day being of roughly the same length. The word equinox derives from the Latin words aequus (equal) and nox (night); in reality, the day is longer than the night at an equinox. Commonly, the day is defined as the period when sunlight reaches the ground in the absence of local obstacles. From the Earth, the Sun appears as a disc rather than a single point of light, so when the center of the Sun is below the horizon, its upper edge is visible.

Furthermore, the atmosphere refracts light, so even when the upper limb of the Sun is below the horizon, its rays reach over the horizon to the ground. In sunrise/sunset tables, the assumed semidiameter (apparent radius) of the Sun is 16 minutes of arc and the atmospheric refraction is assumed to be 34 minutes of arc.

Their combination means that when the upper limb of Sun is on the visible horizon, its center is 50 minutes of arc below the geometric horizon, which is the intersection with the celestial sphere of a horizontal plane through the eye of the observer. These cumulative effects make the day about 14 minutes longer than the night at the Equator and longer still towards the Poles. The real equality of day and night only happens in places far enough from the Equator to have a seasonal difference in day length of at least 7 minutes, actually occurring a few days towards the winter side of each equinox.

The date at which sunset and sunrise becomes exactly 12 hours apart is known as the equilux. Because sunset and sunrise times vary with an observer's geographic location (longitude and latitude), the equilux likewise depends on location and does not exist for locations sufficiently close to the Equator. The equinox, however, is a precise moment in time which is common to all observers on Earth.

VS-luchtmacht redt dure communicatiesatelliet

18/03/12 - 16u42 Bron: belga.be Het was delicaat, maar toch is de Amerikaanse luchtmacht er vorig jaar in geslaagd een militaire communicatiesatelliet te redden die in een verkeerde baan was gestrand. Dit heeft de krant Florida Today onthuld.

Op 10 augustus 2010 nam een Atlas-5 draagraket vanop Cape Canaveral de 1,7 miljard dollar kostende AEHF-1 satelliet mee. Het was de eerste kunstmaan in een pakket van zes voor een systeem van 14 miljard dollar om het VS-leger meer en betere communicatiecapaciteit te geven.

Enkele dagen na in een "parkeerbaan" te zijn afgezet, begonnen er problemen. Tot twee keer toe sloeg de hoofdmotor niet aan om de kunstmaan naar de operationele cirkelvormige baan te brengen. In de parkeerbaan was de AEHF-1 waardeloos. Ook bestond gevaar dat brandstof in de brandstofleidingen tot ontsteking zou kunnen komen en ontploffen.

Specialisten timmerden een reddingsplan ineen, met als kern de twee andere propulsiesystemen. Enkel ontworpen voor koerscorrecties, werden deze de daaropvolgende maanden honderden keren tot ontsteking gebracht. Iedere keer moest men er zorg voor dragen dat het tuig niet met ruimteschroot botste. Drie of vier keer moest de AEHF-1 uitwijken.

De zonnepanelen moesten ook eerder worden uitgeklapt, met als risico beschadiging tijdens de passage door de stralingsgordels rond de Aarde. In oktober bereikte de satelliet de gewenste baan. Op 29 februari werd het testen succesvol afgerond. Er is nog voldoende brandstof voor de voorziene levensduur van veertien jaar.

De vermoedelijke oorzaak van het falen van de hoofdmotor is de aanwezigheid van een stuk stof in een vitale brandstofleiding.

Vijf doden door lawine in Noorwegen

19/03 Buitenland Bij een ongeval met een lawine in Noorwegen zijn maandag vijf buitenlandse wintersporttoeristen om het leven gekomen. Het gaat om vier Zwitsers en een Fransman. De groep van in totaal twaalf skiërs werd in het noorden van het land door een bijna een kilometer brede sneeuwmassa overrompeld.


Een van de bedolven skiërs kon door de reddingsteams levend vanonder de sneeuw gehaald worden, aldus de politie. Met de hulp van zendertjes die ze bij zich droegen, konden de bedolven mensen in de sneeuwmassa gelokaliseerd worden.

"Het laatste lichaam werd onder zes meter sneeuw gevonden", zei teamleider Gaute Austeggen op tv-zender NRK. De nationaliteit van de doden is nog niet bekend. Tot de groep behoorden wintersporters uit Frankrijk en Zwitserland.

Dodelijke berg
Aan de reddingsactie op de 1.288 meter hoge berg Sorbmegaisa in de Noord-Noorse provincie Troms namen een dertigtal helpers en verschillende speurhonden deel. Sorbmegaisa betekent in de taal van de in het noorden van Scandinavië levende Samen zoveel als "dodelijke berg".

Cycloon Lua aan land in noordwesten van Australië
Zware regen, wind met orkaansterkte en overstromingen waren op zaterdag 17 maart te vinden en te verwacchten in het noordwestelijk deel van Australië toen een krachtige cycloon aan land kwam.

Cycloon Lua bereikte de Pilbara Mijnstreek met windsnelheden van meer dan 200 km/uur.
Het oog van de storm passeerde een dunbevolkt gebied ten noorden van Port Hedland. Het systeem was ingeschaald als categorie 4, de tweede sterkste in Australië's cycloonsterkteschaal. In de avond zakte boven land de kracht terug naar 3 en later naar 2.

Mensen wonende aan de kust tussen Bidyadanga en Port Hedland waren al gewaarschuwd om onmiddellijk beschutting te zoeken bij het naderen van de orkaan.
Lua trekt in zuidelijke richting door het binnenland, geleidelijk verder verzwakkend gedurende de nacht, aldus het Australisch Weerinstituut.



Op 15 maart verzamelde Lua vocht en dus kracht boven de Oceaan, uiteindelijk werd het een cycloon van de 4e categorie, het op één na krachtigste type. Foto, NASA.

Japan’s Mt. Fuji volcano awakens after 300 years- increased risk of an eruption warns scientist

February 19, 2012 – JAPAN - Reports are appearing about unrest and signs of a possible awakening of Mt Fuji volcano in Japan. According to a report which includes an unclear photo of the area, a row of new craters, the largest 50 m in diameter, has appeared on the eastern flank of the volcano at 2200 m elevation. Steam was observed erupting from these vents.

The observation joins other signs suggesting a gradual reawakening: A swarm of earthquakes including 4 of magnitude 5 have occurred northeast of Mt Fuji on and after 28 January. An earlier 6.4M quake occurred under the volcano on 15 March 2011. The report also mentions increased activity from a fumarole vent at 1500 m elevation and hot spring areas at the eastern flank observed since 2003. These locations seem to be aligned geographically, and are probably connected.

Dr. Masaaki Kimura of Ryukyu University is quoted to admit that there is an increased risk of an eruption on the eastern flank and that the status of the volcano should be closely monitored.

Dear Concerned Earth Lovers,

The eruption of Mt Fuji will indicate that an east/west fault line has fractured, allowing Northern Honshu to slide into a 6500 metre ocean trench. Earthquakes of the past 90 days in the eastern side of Japan has weakened it's foundation, a porous sub-structure; a land of a volcanic substance.

The resulting tsunamis' will wipe-out millions of humans in the Pacific region as well as severely destabilizing the Earth's crust, resulting in the dislodging of the Western & Eastern Antarctic ice sheets.

This massive loss of weight from the continent of Antarctica will result in an asymmetric rotation of the Earth and so cause the isostasy (Balance of the Earth's crust.) to become unbalanced. Crust displacement at Magnitude 12+ will then occur until the Earth's crust reaches equilibrium, while at the same time hundreds of volcanoes will erupt, lands will disappear and have an extreme destabilizing effect on the climate patterns.

March 9, 2012 – JAPAN - Figures compiled by the ABC reveal that since the massive earthquake in Japan a year ago the country has been rattled by more than five times as many tremors as usual.

That includes 10 aftershocks of magnitude seven or greater. Using figures provided by Japan’s meteorological agency, the ABC found that there have been more than 9,000 significant tremors under and around Japan since last year’s March 11 earthquake. That compares with 1,300 for all of 2010.

As well as 10 quakes of magnitude seven or greater in the past year, there were more than 100 that were more violent than magnitude six. Recent media reports suggest Tokyo has a 70 per cent chance of being hit with a major earthquake in the next four years. –ABC
