This NOAA image taken Tuesday shows clouds and thunderstorms across central states.
Thunderstorms were expected in much of the nation Wednesday, including in the Mid-Atlantic, Southeast and Tennessee and Mississippi Valleys.

Large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes were possible in the Northern and Central Plains to the mid-Mississippi Valley. In the southern High Plains, heavier rainfall and isolated hail and high winds were expected.

A cold front moving through northern Idaho and Montana also was forecast to bring isolated showers and thunderstorms to the area.

Highs of 80s and 90s were forecast for the southern states and across the Plains. Parts of the Southern Plains could reach triple digits. Northern New England and the Pacific Northwest were expected to remain in the 70s and lower 80s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a low of 32 degrees at Truckee-Tahoe, California to a high of 117 degrees at Death Valley, California.
