Excessive heat in the southwest of USA
An excessive heat warning has been issued for the southwest of the United States, with temperatures in some locations rising as high as 48C (120F) in the coming days.
California and Arizona are expected to experience temperatures well over 37 C (100 F), during which time new daily records could be set.
Cities like Phoenix saw its highest temperature levels for the year during the weekend, falling just short of forecasts of 43 C (110F).
High pressure has been the cause of the heat building up over the past couple of days.
This area of high pressure will shift eastward later this week, allowing temperatures to return to normal levels in the Southwest but then causing temperatures to rise in Texas, the southern plains and the lower Mississippi valley.
