Extreme rain across southern Europe

Heavy rain is affecting parts of southern Europe, as Nina Ridge explains.

There has been some exceptionally heavy rainfall over parts of the western Mediterranean and southern Europe.

The town of Le Luc, near Marseille in southern France, was washed with nearly 200 mm of rainfall in just six hours.

Meanwhile, a mudslide swept through the French town of Givors on Monday, damaging houses and around 100 cars.

It is believed no-one was injured in the incident, after the heavy rain caused a small waterway to burst its banks.

The developing area of low pressure could dump as much as 500 mm of rain, which may lead to further flash flooding and mudslides.

The unsettled weather will be slow to clear, with further heavy downpours and thunderstorms likely over the next few days.
