Indonesian villages hit by floods
At least 38 people have been killed as flash floods struck six villages in a remote region of Indonesia.
Dozens more are missing after the floods swept through an area of the Madina district in North Sumatra province early on Tuesday.
The floodwater, unleashed when the Sulang Aling river overflowed, uprooted trees and smashed houses.
The rescue attempt is proving difficult because bridges have collapsed, an official told AFP news agency.
"The other way to reach the affected area is by sea using speedboats, but strong weather... is making that difficult," Edy Syopian, a spokesman for the provincial government, said.
He estimated that the floodwaters had been about two metres (6ft) in height and had displaced around 2,000 people, AFP reported.
The affected region is 275km (170 miles) south-west of the provincial capital Medan.
