Super Typhoon Choi-wan
Super Typhoon Choi-wan strengthens to a strong category 5 storm.
Super typhoon Choi-wan has intensified further to become a strong category 5 storm and is the 15th typhoon of the Pacific season and so far, the strongest.
Choi-wan is currently generating destructive sustained wind speeds of 161mph (259km/h) with gusts of 196mph (315km/h). The super typhoon is currently more than 1243miles (2,000km) across with a clearly defined eye. The storm system is moving northwest at 17mph (27km/h).
Choi-wan strengthened over the very warm waters of the west Pacific and is heading towards islands to the south of Japan. The storm is not expected to make landfall in Japan but its eye is forecast to pass within about 310 miles (500 km) of Tokyo on September 19th.
