Super Typhoon Choi-Wan

Super Typhoon Choi-Wan brings strong winds and rough seas to the archipelago.

Super Typhoon Choi-Wan has passed to the north of the Northern Mariana islands, bringing heavy rain, strong winds and rough seas to the archipelago.

The Northern Marianas are a chain of fifteen tropical islands in the Pacific Ocean, around 1500 miles east of the Philippines.

Choi-Wan is currently packing sustained wind speeds of 150mph and is expected to intensify further as it moves in a north-westerly direction across open water towards Japan.

It is expected to pass to the west of the Japanese volcanic islands of Iwo-To and Chichi-Jima at the end of the week before weakening.

Choi-Wan is the 15th typhoon of the Pacific season and so far, the strongest. The 16th typhoon, Koppu made landfall in Guangdong province in China on Monday bringing winds of 78mph and 150mm of rain. It has weakened considerably since hitting land and is now tracking in a north-westerly direction as a tropical storm.
