Coastal town flood risk warnings ( bbc)

Coastal town flood risk warnings

Flood awareness events are being held in seven towns across Sussex
A flood awareness event has been staged in a coastal town where only 22% of householders in a risk zone have signed up to receive flood warnings.

The Environment Agency, fire crews and Arun council officers want to encourage everyone in Littlehampton to make sure they receive alerts.

The event was part of Sussex Flood Safety Week, which saw the Environment Agency visit seven towns in the county.

The agency said climate change would increase risk but people could prepare.

'Devastating impact'

Area manager James Humphrys said an estimated £1bn was being spent on flood damage across England and Wales each year.

Max Hood, county fire officer at West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, said: "We see all too often the devastating impact of flooding and the length of time it can take to recover from it.

"As a fire service, we make plans and prepare for flooding and we would encourage all those who live within flood risk areas to do the same."

Awareness events have been held in in Shoreham, Worthing, Horsham, Littlehampton, Hastings and Uckfield. The last event of the week takes place in Newhaven on Saturday.
