More snow on the way for Eastern US
Cold air will combine with a deep area of low pressure
A severe winter storm will bring near-record snowfall to parts of the US Plains and central Midwest later this week.
The deep area of low pressure will bring up to 50cm (20 inches) of snow as well as very strong winds. There is also a risk of ice accumulating as rain falls on frozen surfaces, which could bring down trees and power lines. The storm could affect as much as a third of the population of the US.
It will be followed by very cold air, with temperatures falling as low as -26C.
New York City and parts of New Jersey received 50cm (20 inches) of snow last week causing the city of New York to declare a 'weather emergency' amid massive transport disruption.
