The Met Office warned of a risk of icy conditions
A widespread risk of ice on roads and pavements in the north of Scotland has led the Met Office to issue a severe weather warning.
It said overnight rain followed by freezing conditions had left untreated roads in a hazardous condition.
The weather warning covered the whole of the Highlands, Grampian, Angus and Perth and Kinross, Dundee and Fife.
The Met Office also warned of snow showers affecting the Northern Isles - Orkney and Shetland.
Most mainland schools in Orkney were closed, and there were eight schools closed across Shetland.
Snow started falling over Edinburgh at about 0530 GMT on Tuesday
There were 32 schools in Aberdeenshire expecting transport difficulties. Parents were advised to check Aberdeenshire Council's website for the latest details.
Heavy snow was slowing down traffic in the Lothians and Borders region, with some lying on the outskirts of Edinburgh and the city centre.
Echline Nursery in Edinburgh has been closed due to heating problems.
Highland Council said no schools were closed in its area.
Northern Constabulary said all roads were open in the force area, but wintry conditions continued to affect Caithness, Sutherland and Northern Isles.
Buses ran as a replacement for the 0812 Wick to Inverness train service. ScotRail said this was due to a fault with the train and not the weather.
