Weather continues to disrupt the Olympics

AdvertisementAs Vancouver sees more unseasonably mild weather, western Europe and the eastern US continue colder than normal.

Over the past two months America has seen unusually cold weather conditions as far south as Florida and more recently Washington had record breaking snow fall.

In contrast the Canadians on the west coast continue to suffer mild conditions at the Winter Olympics.

The cause is the continuing effect of El NiƱo on the jet stream.

In Europe a blocking high has developed forcing the jet-stream over the Atlantic keeping the mild air south while leaving the cold air over the UK and Europe.

Meanwhile, the jet-stream over western Canada has been pushed further north than usual moving the cold air up leaving milder air over Vancouver.

That is likely to change in the next few weeks as we move into spring. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) forecasts a weakening in the El Nino over the next few months.

Daniel Corbett describes how the process works.
