Tropical Storm Chanthu heading for China
Just days after Typhoon Conson struck parts of southern China, a new tropical cyclone is heading for the country.
As of Tuesday morning, Chanthu was a relatively weak tropical storm around 315 miles (510km) south of Hong Kong, moving west-northwestwards at approximately 10mph (16km/h).
Although Chanthu is passing over the warm waters of the South China Sea, conditions in the upper atmosphere are not favourable enough to allow the cyclone to reach typhoon strength.
Tropical Storm Chanthu is still expected to strengthen slightly before landfall, which is expected to occur west of Hong Kong later on Wednesday with winds gusting to around 65mph (100km/h).
The cyclone may exacerbate flooding in southern China, where rainfall since 1st July has affected around 38 million people.
Typhoon Conson left 76 people dead and 72 missing in the Philippines after it battered the country's most populous island of Luzon last week, knocking out power and damaging more than 30,000 houses.
