Northeast US set for Arctic blast ( de morgen.be)

Northeast US set for Arctic blast by Alex Deakin

The Midwest and northeast USA will experience freezing conditions over the next few days, with the arrival of a bitterly cold winter storm. Currently lying over Alaska, the storm is forecast to spread southeast over the next 24 hours, in two waves of cold arctic air.

The first wave is beginning to make its way into the northern Plains, and is bringing blizzard conditions to the Great Lakes, Ohio and the Deep South. Gusty winds and snow showers are expected to lash this region over the next few days.

The second blast of air is tracking towards north eastern states and could lead to a number of states experiencing their coldest winter in several years. Typical maximum temperatures in New York are around 3C (37F) at this time of year, but after the arrival of the cold air later this week, they could struggle to reach freezing.

At night, temperatures could dip below -18C (0F) in the city, which has not been seen since 1994.
