Kammuri expected to weaken before the start of the Olympics by Tomasz Schafernaker
Hong Kong issued a storm warning on Wednesday as Tropical Storm Kammuri approached the city. The storm has raised a number 8 storm signal; the most severe on the cyclone scale, meaning winds are expected to exceed 40mph (63kph).
In Macau in the south of China, public transport and flights have been suspended as a result of the strong winds. A maximum wind speed of 66mph (106kph) was recorded by the Macau Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau early on Wednesday.
The storm is heading towards southern China just days before the start of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. However forecasters at the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) expect the storm not to bring too much disruption to the events, which are in the north of the country. Kammuri is expected to weaken by the start of the weekend, tracking westwards along the Guangdong coast, bringing some heavy showers to Beijing over the next few days.
