Tropical Storm Fay hits land again by Tomasz Schafernaker
Tropical Storm Fay was downgraded into a depression on Saturday night, but cities along the Gulf Coast are again preparing themselves for the onset of further heavy rain. The centre of the storm made its fourth landfall early on Saturday, bringing heavy rain and strong winds to north east Apalachicola.
Fay has been an unusual storm since it was officially named on August 15, making landfall a total of four times in Florida. Meteorologists at the National Hurricane Centre say the storm is unprecedented in terms of its slow speed, large circulation and the fact that it has brought heavy rain to 90% of Florida.
Meanwhile, in the North Pacific Tropical Storm Julio formed just off the south east tip of the Baja Peninsula on Sunday morning. The Mexican government issued a tropical storm warning from Santa Fe on the west coast to San Evaristo on the Gulf of California. Forecasters expect it to strengthen over the next few days but say it is unlikely to make hurricane status.
