Floods in Scotland by Dan Corbett
Hundreds of shops and businesses across Dundee in Scotland were clearing up after some of the worst flooding experienced in the city.
Parts of the city were left under 4ft (48 inches) of water after heavy downpours fell during Thursday afternoon. Sewerage and drainage systems were unable to cope, allowing floods to ravage much of the city centre. Shops were inundated with water forcing officials to close the city centre during the rush hour. Fire crews worked around the clock to pump water away from the flooded streets and basements of homes and businesses.
August 2008 has been a very wet month across much of Scotland. Some of the worst hit regions have been Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and Fife. To give some idea of how wet it has been in Scotland, Gogarbank in Edinburgh has received 195mm (7.68 inches) of rain since the start of August up until the 22nd at 1000 GMT. The entire monthly August average for Edinburgh is closer to 77mm (3 inches).
Some drier and brighter weather is expected for much of Scotland for the coming Bank Holiday weekend, and apart from a little rain at times, forecasters are not expecting any rain to be as heavy as what has fallen recently.
