Heavy rain lashes northern Vietnam by Alex Deakin
The remnants of Tropical Storm Kammuri lashed northern Vietnam over the weekend, bringing heavy rain and flash floods. More than 120 people have been killed by the flooding, which triggered landslides in the mountainous northern region. The province of Lao Cai on the border of China was the worst hit by the rain, with over 3000 homes being damaged or destroyed by the flooding.
Over in the Eastern Pacific, Hurricane Hernan continued to churn, strengthening into a category 3. Once the wind speed of storms exceeds 74mph (119kph) they reach hurricane status on the Saffir Simpson scale. Hernan is the first major hurricane of the Eastern Pacific season but is not expected to cause any damage, as it is located far off Mexico’s western coast.
The National Meteorology Centre forecast more serious flooding over the coming days, warning of heavy rain across many northern regions, including Lao Cai and Lai Chau.
