Story Highlights• Temperatures in East to be 30 degrees below normal

(AP) -- Frigid weather was forecast to spread across the East on Tuesday, with snow likely in parts of the Great Lakes region and the mountains of New Hampshire and Vermont.

The chill, plunging daytime temperatures as much as 30 degrees below normal, was compounded by northwestern winds and gusts of to 45 mph, making it feel much colder.

A weak low-pressure system dropping out of Canada was forecast to bring snow showers to the Upper Midwest and the upper Great Lakes. Up to 5 inches of snow was expected over the area.

Elsewhere, mostly sunny skies were expected to dominate the remainder of the Midwest and the Mississippi Valley. Winds were forecast to be light, except for a steady southerly wind over the Southern Plains and the Lower Mississippi Valley.

Continued warm temperatures were expected in the West, with highs pushing into the upper 80s in the Southwest and California deserts. A Pacific storm system was expected to bring rain to the Northwest and northern California.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Monday ranged from a low of 18 below zero in Hallock, Minnesota, to a high of 87 degrees in Rialto, California.
