(AP) -- Bitter cold spread from the Great Lakes to the Northeast on Tuesday, while snow fell in the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest.

Afternoon temperatures were only in the single digits in northern New England, and breezy conditions created low wind chill values.

In the West, it was mainly dry. In the Southeast, temperatures rose into the 70s, but low relative humidities created dangerous fire conditions, prompting red-flag warnings in Georgia and Florida.

The Rockies were warm, with afternoon temperatures in the 40s and 50s. The Northwest rose into the 50s and 60s, and California was even warmer with temperatures in the 70s and 80s.

Temperatures in the lower 48 states on Tuesday ranged from a morning low of minus 23 degrees at Land 'O Lakes, Wisconsin, to a midday high of 87 degrees at Gila Bend, Arizona
