Flooding in Kenya
Torrential rain across much of Kenya has lead to the death of at least seven people with thousands being displaced by recent flash flooding.
One of the worst hit areas is the southern coastal district of the Taveta. Here, villages have been isolated by floodwaters and roads have been washed away making rescue operations impossible.
Although flooding can occur outside the rainy seasons, the recent heavy rains have been attributed to the start of the regional wet season. Kenya has two distinct rainy seasons every year. The first starts in mid-March and ends in mid-June. This is the longest rainy season and can give rise to some of the worst flooding of the year. The short rainy season starts in mid-October until mid-December.
After days of heavy rain for much of eastern Kenya, forecasters expect a brief respite over the coming days with the heaviest rain expected to lash further south over coastal Tanzania.
