More than 1,100 flee 3 blazes; tanker pilot among victims
A woman known only as "Gillian" is helped leave her home by her friend Ross Barrett after a fire ran through the town of Ordway, Colo., on Tuesday. Gillian lost 400 of the 1,400 trees she had planted on her property.
ORDWAY, Colo. - At least two people died after wind-driven wildfires burned into a southeast Colorado town and an Army post. An air tanker pilot was also killed when his plane went down while battling another blaze.
At least 20 buildings were damaged in Ordway and about 11 square miles of grasslands were scorched around the town 122 miles southeast of Denver. More than 1,100 residents were evacuated and two deaths were reported.
Much of the state was under a National Weather Service red flag warning, signifying high fire danger.
