More heavy snow for the USA and Canada by Elizabeth Saary
In New York many residents spent the last day of 2007 clearing away snow, and with another winter storm forecast through today and tomorrow with near freezing temperatures, it’s likely many people will see a fresh covering.
The National Weather Service expects the storm to move eastwards from the Ohio River valley and spread heavy snow across western New York. A second storm just off the coast in the Atlantic is forecast to bring snow to northern New York and New England. The storm could dump as much as 23 to 25cm (9 or 10 inches) in some higher parts of New York State, giving rise to transport problems.
The storms in the northeast are expected to affect parts of eastern Canada too. Heavy snow has been falling today with total accumulations expected to be in the range of 20cm (8 inches) by this evening. Last night high winds across parts of Newfoundland and Labrador lead to officials to postpone New Year’s Eve fireworks in St. John’s.
Forecasters expect much of the snow to clear away north and eastwards by today with some very cold, but drier weather to follow.
