Heavy rain prompts police warning

Police have warned of the danger of surface water on the roads
Police have warned of difficult driving conditions due to heavy rain forecast for parts of Scotland.

The Met Office has predicted up to 50mm of rainfall in the Stirling, Dumfries and Galloway and Strathclyde areas.

Its has warned of heavy rain over the period from 0900 BST until 1800 BST on Friday.

Sgt Bill Milven of Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary advised drivers to allow extra time for journeys and to take extra care on the region's roads.

He said: "Friday is a busy day for traffic and heavy rain and surface water is a real danger.

"The public are advised to heed this warning, allow extra time for travelling, keep a safe distance and take extra care on the roads."

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency has also put several flood watches in place.

They cover rivers in Dumfries and Galloway, the Scottish Borders, West Central Scotland, Falkirk, Stirling, the Earn and the Upper Tay and its tributaries.
