Heavy snow hits western USA by Alex Deakin

The first major storm of the snow season hit western America on Saturday, with parts of
Montana, Wyoming and Idaho hit by heavy snowfall. Winter storm warnings were issued for a number of western states, with several counties in Wyoming reporting as much as 33 inches (83.8cm) of snow over the weekend.

The snow reduced visibility on the states roads, causing icy travel conditions, with the gusty winds knocking over trees and power lines. In the 24 hours ending 8am on Sunday, the city of Red Lodge in Montana had the highest snowfall total, recording 42 inches (107cm).

After dumping snow across the west, the storm spread along the Northern Rockies and into the Plains. Along with the snow, heavy rain and thunderstorms brought more than an inch of rain to some parts of South Carolina.

Forecasters at the National Severe Weather Centre expected the heaviest of the snow to continue pushing west on Monday, towards eastern Canada.
