Both the UK and parts of the USA are experiencing a taste of winter this week, as they are hit by cold weather and temperatures typical of December. The UK temperatures look set to struggle today, with many places seeing an afternoon high of only 6C (43F), a temperature common to the December and January months.

A number of warnings have been issued today by the Met Office, for heavy snow across parts of northern Scotland- Orkney, Shetland, Grampian and parts of the highlands are expected to see heavy snow and sleet through the course of Tuesday.

Across the Atlantic, parts of North America have also been hit by wintry weather, with Fargo in North Dakota breaking its previous record for snowfall at this time of year. Around 1.4 inches (36mm) or snow fell over a 12 hour period on Sunday.

According to the National Weather Centre, another storm has been developing in the Atlantic over the past two days and is bringing rain to eastern USA. Cold air behind this system is expected to deliver a significant amount of snow from north east Pennsylvania to upstate New York on Tuesday evening.
