Torrential rain continues to lash southern China by Rob McElwee
For the past five days torrential rain has been lashing parts of southern China, causing flooding and landslides. Four people died on Sunday when landslides were triggered in the southern province of Guangdong. Many reservoirs exceeded their warning lines, leading to widespread flooding.
Last Wednesday tropical storm ‘Fengshen’ made landfall in Shenzhen, bringing heavy downpours to many southern regions. In the past five days a record breaking 130cm (51.2 inches) of rain has fallen in the city.
So far this summer, heavy rains have brought havoc to parts of China. At the beginning of June, torrential rain lashed nine provinces in the south and east of the country. In just ten days more than 60 people died and over one and a half million more were left homeless. It looks like there is little respite over the next couple of days, with further heavy rain forecast to hit the region.
