Heat wave grips parts of northern India
Doctors have reported people falling sick because of the heat
An severe heat wave has hit northern and eastern India with temperatures reaching more than 40C (104F).
Jharsuguda in Orissa state recorded 45C (113F). In Simla, a town in the Himalayan foothills, temperatures rose to a record 27C (80.6F).
Officials in the Indian Meteorological Department say the record heat in April follows an unusually warm March.
The meteorological department said the sweltering conditions were likely to continue for a few more days.
Meteorological officials said the heat wave was due to lack of rain in northern India.
Doctors said people were falling sick because of the heat.
Severe drought conditions are threatening tea production in Darjeeling in eastern India, a local official said.
