Snow storms roll across the US by Matt Taylor
An area of Low pressure lying over Quebec has brought strong winds and snow showers to a number of US states. Storms have been rolling across the Plains, bringing snow showers to the Great Lakes, before moving east towards Michigan. According to the Severe Weather Centre, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan was hardest hit by snow on Monday, with 11 inches (279mm) falling in Shingleton.
Lake effect snow has been falling across the Great Lakes, with forecasters at the National Weather Service issuing snow warnings and advisories for the region. The snow was triggered by a cold arctic wind, blowing over long fetches of warm water in the Great Lakes. The warmer waters provide energy, and picks up water vapour which freezes and is then deposited as snow.
Through Tuesday night further snow is expected through upstate New York and Ontario, as the storm continues to track eastwards.
