PLUMES of smoke rose into the sky as a volcano on the tiny Italian island of Stromboli erupted today.
The erruption sent lava spewing into the sea and sparked a warning from authorities worried that it would cause a small tsunami.
In 2002, the island which is located 60 kilometers north of Sicily was evacuated after a landslide triggered a wave of water that caused several injuries.
Authorities have told people living on Stromboli and nearby islands of Panarea and Lipari to stay 10 meters above sea level.
"At present there are risks for the population, but the risks are minor for those who are following instructions,'' the head of the Italian Civil Protection Department, Guido Bertolaso said on Sky News.
