Blizzards leave thousands without electricity

Thousands have been left without electricity after blizzards sweep through Scotland and Northern Ireland.

A total of twenty thousand homes had their electricity cut off after winds, heavy snow and ice gripped overhead power lines in central and southern Scotland.

Meanwhile, blizzards left five thousand homes in Northern Ireland without power. The worst affected areas are Omagh, Enniskillen and Dungannon.

Strong winds and heavy snow are also causing disruption on the roads. The police said driving conditions are "treacherous". With conditions turning icy overnight in Northern Ireland, a difficult morning commute is expected.

More snow is forecast for Scotland on Wednesday, with another 20 centimetres over the hills. It will be colder than of late in England and Wales, with frequent heavy showers.
