Chaos Scotland after heavy snow... ( BBC)

Heavy snow creates travel chaos across Scotland

The snow has caused traffic problems across the country
Heavy snow and strong winds have caused major travel disruption across large parts of Scotland.

Several schoolchildren have been injured in a coach crash on the A73 at Wiston, South Lanarkshire.

Numerous roads have been closed including the A1 at Haddington and the A9 at Drumochter in the Highlands and Blair Atholl, Perthshire.

About 19,000 homes have been left without power, including 8,000 in the Dumfries and Galloway area.

The north east and the south west are also affected.

Strathclyde Police said the A73 coach accident happened in "horrendous" weather conditions on a bridge shortly before 0600 BST.

The coach was taking 39 Lanark Grammar School pupils and five members of staff to Alton Towers theme park.

Some of the children were seriously injured and others were described as "walking wounded". An eyewitness said the coach ended up on its side in a burn.

Trains cancelled

The A7 has been closed between Edinburgh and Galashiels southbound at Middleton and also further down the road closer to Galashiels.

The A1 was closed between Abbotts View and Oak Tree junctions at Haddington.

A total of six roads have been closed in the Lothian and Borders area including the A68 at Soutra.

A number of roads have also been shut in the Aberdeen area.

There are especially problems on the A96 between Aberdeen and Fochabers where the road is closed between Huntly and Colpy.

High winds have caused snow to drift in many areas
A lorry has jack-knifed and is blocking the route between Inverurie and Huntly. The road is also closed southbound between Huntly and Keith because of another jack knifed lorry.

On the A90 Laurencekirk - Stonehaven, northbound traffic is stuck in drifting snow.

Trees have come down on minor roads in the Tayside and central area.

Trains between Berwick-upon-Tweed and Edinburgh will be cancelled until further notice due to a landslide between Berwick upon Tweed and Dunbar.

However, ScotRail services between North Berwick and Edinburgh are running normally.

Passengers are advised not to try and travel between Berwick-upon-Tweed and Edinburgh.

Trains between Kirkcaldy and Inverkeithing have also been affected by a landslip.

All P&O and Stena ferry sailings between Scotland and Northern Ireland have been cancelled.
