River flooding after heavy rain

Roads were flooded in Alfriston after a river burst its banks
A river has burst its banks in Sussex and flood warnings have been issued after heavy rain in the South East.

The Environment Agency issued three flood warnings for rivers in Kent, and one in Sussex.

Houses, roads and fields were flooded in the village of Alfriston in East Sussex after the Cuckmere River burst its banks.

The Environment Agency said the area's November average rainfall was 80mm, but the region had 40 to 65mm in a weekend.

Heather Rajaratnan, whose home in Alfriston has been flooded for the second time in two years, said she moved furniture upstairs when the water reached her driveway.

She said: "It took me four hours to take most of our stuff upstairs, or as much as I could - and then just wait to see what we could salvage."

'Ground saturated'

The Environment Agency has two flood warnings in force for the River Darent in Kent, one for the River Beult near Pluckley, and one for Barcombe Mills in Sussex.

More than 20 flood watches were also in force across Kent and East Sussex.

Rivers in the Thames area of Surrey had three flood watches - in the River Wey, Tillingbourne and Cranleigh areas.

Harvey Bradshaw, Environment Agency area manager, said: "Previous dry ground is now saturated and river levels have risen."

He urged people living in flood-prone areas to consider flood protection measures.

More rain is forecast for later in the week.
