Brazil hit by flooding and mudslides after heavy rain

Sao Paolo's shanty towns were hit hard by the flooding

Heavy rain across the southern half of Brazil on Friday has triggered flooding and mudslides, killing 20.

Many of those affected live in shanty towns in the country's second city of Sao Paulo, where floodwaters reached a metre high.

On the southern border with Uruguay and Argentina in Rio Grande do Sul state, rivers swelled to 10 metres above normal levels and 18,000 people have been forced from their homes. A state of emergency has been declared in over 130 towns and cities in the area.

More moderate to heavy rain is forecast in the area on Saturday and Sunday.
