Zuidelijke deel Afrika geteisterd door enorme overstromingen

Flooding in Southern Africa

Torrential rains forced more than 30 000 people to flee their homes in southern Angola and floods killed several thousand cattle, according to state television on Thursday.

The worst of the floods hit Kunene province on Wednesday with up to two metres of water.

Namibia has also been hit by flooding as a result of the flood waters into neighbouring Angola flowing southwards. The country declared a national emergency on Tuesday, after floods killed 42 people and displaced thousands, with no end in sight.

The rain turned normally dry floodplains, known as ‘oshonas’ into raging rivers, washing away roads and bridges and forcing the closure of scores of schools in the northern Owambo region. The hydrology department in Namibia are expecting more floods, as the Angolan province of Cunene has received non-stop rain for the past 3 weeks.

Several countries in southern Africa have been plagued by flooding since the start of the rainy season in December.
