Heavy snow covers parts of northern USA
A winter storm hit parts of northern USA on Thursday dumping a record amount of snow across a number of states. A record was set in Davenport, Washington , where 3.4 inches of snow (8.6cm) fell in just 24 hours. This was more than double the previous record of 1.5 inches (3.8cm) set in 1985, resulting in a number of power cuts and road closures.
With the storm heading east, the National Weather Service has been prompted to issue a number of warnings along the north east coastline, from Pennsylvania to southern Maine. States within this region are expected to receive between 1 and 3 inches (2.5-7.5cm) of snow over the course of Friday.
New England looks set to receive some snow over the next 24 hours, but then the storm system is expected to track eastwards, over the Atlantic Ocean. The low pressure system will be replaced by a ridge of high pressure, which will bring cold but more settled weather for the weekend.
