Record temperatures three days in a row
Temperature records have been broken three days in a row in the city of Caribou, in Maine. On Tuesday, temperatures in the city dropped to a record -14C (6.8F), breaking the previous record of 0C (32F) set in 1939. Temperatures of -6C and -14C on the previous two days also became record lows.
Caribou has already had its snowiest winter ever, with over 186 inches (4.7 metres) of snow falling this season. Normally the city receives on average 120 inches (3 metres) of snow in a typical winter season, with the first usually falling at the beginning of November.
The climate of Maine is ‘humid continental’, meaning winters are cold and snowy throughout the state, but are particularly harsh in the northern regions.
