Parts of the USA hit by more storms
Further flooding has caused havoc across parts of the Midwest US as a line of severe storms, known as a Squall line, continued its journey eastwards towards the Eastern Seaboard.
In Louisiana authorities were assessing the damage in Jefferson Parish, near New Orleans after a possible tornado touched down yesterday. Homes were damaged, trees felled and power lines were brought down giving widespread power failures.
As the storm system moves away from the Eastern Seaboard, very cold air has moved in behind replacing the rain and storms with gale-force winds and snow. Winds across the Appalachians are expected to gust to 50 mph (80 km/h) today and heavy snow is forecast for New England and near the borders of Canada overnight. The National Weather Service has issued warnings for heavy snow, with possible accumulations of 152 - 305mm (6 – 12 inches) in places.
High pressure has now dominated much of the Midwest US and is expected to bring some fine, dry and settled weather. This is good news for the areas that were hit by widespread flooding.
