More severe storms to batter the USA
Yet another winter storm is affecting much of eastern USA with heavy rain, snow and storms set to continue through this weekend.
Two large and intense low pressure systems amalgamated across the southeast of the USA and have spread north and slightly eastwards. The National Weather Service has issued severe warnings across a number of states including Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Virginia, Ohio and New York. Parts of eastern Canada have also been warned of heavy snow associated with this huge storm system.
Very heavy rain has been falling across states to the south and east of the storm system with a risk of flooding for many. Tornadic thunderstorms developed in Florida where around 20 homes in Lake City were damaged after two tornadoes reportedly touched down late on Friday. Heavy rain is affecting much of the eastern seaboard with meteorologists forecasting over 100mm (4 inches) of rain in many places. Flooding and travel disruption is expected. To the north of the storm system, some cold air is being dragged down from Canada which is giving heavy snow to parts of the Midwest and the South. Forecasters are expecting up to 305mm (12 inches) of snow in Kentucky and Ohio.
By tonight the storm system is forecast to push further northeastwards, spreading blizzards through the Niagara Peninsula into southern Ontario and along the St. Lawrence Valley in east Canada.
