Cold Easter expected across the UK
Forecasters are expecting a cold blast to affect much of the UK during the Easter period as winds will feed in colder air from the north.
A low pressure system will bring rain and strong winds to all parts on Thursday but once the low moves away, high pressure will build to the west of Ireland, introducing an arctic airflow over the UK. Wintry showers will affect mainly northern and eastern parts by Good Friday with snow accumulations on higher ground and possibly at lower levels. Under clear skies, overnight frosts will be likely for much of the country with a risk of ice to areas that receive showers.
However, despite daytime temperatures between 5C to 7C (41F – 45F) there will be plenty of sunshine around too, with best of the sunshine reserved for central and southern England.
Much of Europe will also experience some cold weather for the Easter period with snow showers and strong winds affecting northern and western parts. Forecasters expect some significant snowfall across the Alps over the weekend.
As Easter arrives early this year, cold weather is always likely to pose a risk. This year our Easter weather is in sharp contrast to last year, when temperatures in London hit 20C (68F) on Easter Sunday, 8th April 2007.
