Storm brings snow to parts of Canada and New York
A storm which slammed into New England and parts of Canada on Friday gave many residents a taste of winter, bringing heavy rain and snow. Although the storm moved away quite quickly, forecasters expect heavy snow to continue to fall across eastern Quebec over the next 24 hours, with as much as 15-30 cm (6-12 inches) forecast along a narrow band of land.
The storm also brought snow to New York, where residents woke on Friday to find much of the city blanketed by snow. Since delivering heavy rain and snow to New England and Quebec the storm has begun to move away from the region, but snow warnings remain in effect. Warnings are in place from upstate New York to northern Maine as remnants of cold air from the storm continue to flow across the region.
This was an example of ‘lake effect snow’, which is produced when a cold artic wind travels across a warmer body of water, such as a lake. The wind picks up vapour which freezes and falls along a narrow belt of land as snow. This effect occurs across the world, but is best known around the Great Lakes of North America.
