Wildfires in California by Darren Bett

Wildfires have broken out across parts of California over the past few days, forcing the evacuation of scores of residents.

Firefighters are battling two significant fires in the state, one in Yuba County in the north and another near Lake Tahoe in Hope Valley. More than 250 people were evacuated in Yuba County as a wildfire ravaged over 100 acres of tinder dry brush and scrubland, and threatened nearby homes.

Another fire broke out on Sunday in the scenic Hope Valley, south of Lake Tahoe, where more than 150 acres of forest have been scorched. Firefighters have contained much of the blaze thanks to a recent drop in temperatures and lighter winds.

Officials have warned that September and October are historically the most devastating months for wildfires across the state. California has experienced high temperatures this year and has also been plagued by drought, as a result, the state may see a much higher than average number of fires during autumn.
