Much of China has been hit hard by massive rains this summer
(CNN) -- Flooding and landslides in northeastern China left have more than 100 people dead or missing, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported Sunday, citing provincial officials.
Jilin Province has been experiencing a week of heavy rainfall that has caused 37,000 houses to collapse and damaged an additional 125,000, according to Xinhua.
"The flood is unprecedented," Xinhua quoted Sun Jingyuan, a top official in Antu County as saying. "Its devastation is appalling."
Jilin joins a lengthy list of areas affected by rain and flooding in China this summer. At least 134 million people across 28
provinces have been impacted by the weather.
Jilin's civil affairs department told Xinhua that that economic losses due to natural disasters since June have reached 9.15 billion yuan (U.S. $1.35 billion).
Officials estimate that nearly 600,000 residents have been evacuated as a result of the flooding, according to Xinhua.
Heavy rains are forecast to continue through Wednesday.
