Floods spark caravan parks rescue
Resident Geoffrey Newbould describes how he was evacuated from a flooded caravan park in Knaresborough
Heavy rain has caused flooding in towns and villages across North Yorkshire.
About a dozen people were rescued by firefighters from three caravan parks on the banks of the River Nidd in Knaresborough on Sunday night.
Crews took them by boat to an emergency centre in the town. They also rescued a couple with a young child trapped in a car at Moreton-on-Swale, Northallerton.
The fire service attended 15 flooding incidents across the county, including several homes in Pateley Bridge.
Roads closed
Elsewhere in the Yorkshire Dales, houses were flooded in the Richmond, Reeth, Hawes and Leyburn areas.
Several roads were closed due to flooding, including a section of the A684 Stokesley Road in Northallerton and the A6108 Darlington Road in Richmond.
The Environment Agency had 21 flood warnings in place on Monday morning after about 5cm (2in) of rainfall was recorded at Fylingdales on the North York Moors on Sunday.
The agency said river levels on higher ground were now starting to fall, but in the lower reaches, such as the centre of York, levels would continue to rise.
The River Ouse, which runs through York, is expected to peak at lunchtime.
