Flood children in camp evacuation

Holidaymakers at Keswick Campsite have been packing up and leaving

More than 100 children were moved out of a Cumbrian campsite over fears about rising water levels.

Cumbria Police worked with emergency planners from Cumbria County Council and the Environment Agency to take action because of the risk of flooding.

Two campsites in the Keswick and Bassenthwaite areas were evacuated early on Wednesday with the children moved to Keswick School.

Most returned to their original pitches or found alternatives later in the day.

The Environment Agency had issued a flood warning for Keswick campsite.

There were flood watches for many other areas of Cumbria.

The action was taken after rising water levels in Derwent Water, Bassenthwaite and the River Greta.

BBC Look North's Laura Bicker said organisers with the schoolchildren contacted the police early on Wednesday and the decision was made for safety reasons.

She said the children had set up their sleeping bags at the school.
