Wildfires force evacuations in Florida

Florida

(CNN) -- A second day of intense wildfires near New Smyrna Beach, Florida, prompted the evacuation of a neighborhood and the closure of a major highway Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

No injuries were reported in the blaze, and no homes had been destroyed, said Shannon Lewis, a spokeswoman for the city government.

But the blaze forced local officials to close Interstate 95 between New Smyrna Beach and Port Orange, about 10 miles to the north, and evacuate an undetermined number of people in a neighborhood east of the interstate, Lewis said. (Watch smoke and flames from the air -- 0:40)

The fire was believed to have scorched about 100 acres by midafternoon Sunday, Lewis said -- far smaller than the 1,000-plus acre blaze that hit the same area Saturday.

It was being fueled by dry conditions and gusty, variable winds.

"We have crews in the field trying to gain control," Lewis said. "We have cut some lines which the fire has jumped."

The central Florida town of about 17,500 is located on the state's east coast, just north of Cape Canaveral.
