Tropical Storm Fay forms in the Caribbean by Rob McElwee
Fay became the sixth tropical storm of the Atlantic Hurricane season, forming over the Dominican Republic on Friday. As of 8am Saturday the storm had maximum sustained winds of 45mph (75kph) and was moving across Hispaniola; the island containing the Dominican Republic and Haiti.
A tropical storm warning was issued for the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, and the north of Haiti. This means tropical storm conditions are expected in the area within the next 24 hours. The centre of Fay is set to track over Hispaniola later on Saturday night, passing over eastern Cuba on Sunday. Fay could to dump up to 305 mm (12 inches) of rain over eastern Cuba in the coming days, triggering flash floods and mudslides.
Currently over the southern Pacific, Tropical storm Iselle, slowly gained strength through Thursday, but is not expected to threaten land. Forecasters predict the storm will head towards cooler waters and dissipate over the weekend.
