Heavy rain lashes South India

Many parts of the Tamil Nadu region of southern India have been hit by torrential rain yesterday damaging thousands of acres of farmland and rice fields.

The rain was fairly short lived but intense and was associated with a low pressure system which had developed across a large portion of south India including the Lakshadweep Islands and the Maldives. Yesterday’s rain event in Tamil Nadu occurred along a strong trough that spread westwards across the region. Heavy rain also affected the city of Chennai, paralysing the metropolis as roads quickly became inundated with water.

The low pressure also brought strong and gusty winds to much of the south with wind speeds reaching over 30mph (50km/h) along southern Tamil Nadu, the Kerala coasts and the Lakshadweep Islands. Fishermen have been warned not to venture out to sea during the next 24 hours as the winds are expected to remain strong.

With the low pressure still nearby, further heavy rain is likely across Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry through the rest of today and into tomorrow.
