NEW YORK (CNN) -- Snowstorms whipped through the Northeast on Friday, causing significant travel delays at airports in the New York area and elsewhere.

The National Weather Service said 6 to 9 inches of snow have accumulated in parts of the New York metropolitan area.

John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport in New York and Newark International Airport in New Jersey were expecting arrival delays of more than three hours, according to the Federal Aviation Administration's Web site. Planes landing at Newark International could be nearly seven hours late.

The small Westchester Airport in New York closed for snow removal, and the FAA anticipated that it would reopen Saturday.

Philadelphia International Airport in Pennsylvania has had 27 percent of its flights canceled, said a spokesperson for the airport, which averages more than 1,200 flights a day. Travelers were advised to check with individual carriers to determine affected flights.

The National Weather Service said that the snow will continue into the afternoon but that warmer winds later in the day will change the snow to sleet and freezing rain.

"Take your time getting to where you need to be," weather forecaster Joe Pollina advised.
