(CNN) -- Landslides triggered by torrential rain have left at least 38 people missing in southwest China's Sichuan province Saturday, China's official Xinhua news agency reported.
Thousands of people and vehicles were stranded as roads become impassable. Thirteen feet of water covered the only highway linking Wenchuan County to Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, the agency reported.
Around 10,000 residents have been evacuated. The county government has designated schools and office buildings of township governments as temporary shelters, the agency reported.
In 2008, Wenchuan County, a tourist destination, suffered a 8-magnitude earthquake claimed almost 70,000 lives.
